Why do people watch thrillers? 

  • People enjoy watching thrillers because they evoke emotions while the audience are watching them, such as excitement, suspense.  
  • Audiences may also like the adrenaline that watching the thriller genre brings. 

Popularity of Thrillers over time  

  • Thrillers gained popularity in the 1950’s due to the increasing popularity of spy films which are a part of the thriller genre. 
  • Thrillers first gained popularity in the 1990’s when Alfred Hitchcock's films grew in popularity and started to enter cinemas.  
  • Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous thrillers Vertigo was released in the 1990’s and helped to increase the genre’s popularity during the 90’s. 
  • In the 1990’s the famous thriller Silence of the Lambs was released by Jonathan Demme which helped to increase the genre’s popularity. 
  • In 2019 there was also a spike in the genre's popularity through the film Parasite became the most awarded movie of the year, this shows the continuous growing popularity of Thrillers.
