The Development of the Thriller Genre.
- The earliest record of the thriller genre is from 1821 when James Fenimore Copper wrote The Spy.
- Alfred Hitchcock was one of the main figures in developing the Thriller genre and today is one of the most well-known thriller movie makers. In the mid 1930’s he created lots of spy films which was the start of him creating thriller TV/Films. His first thriller film was called The Lodger in 1927.
- The Sopranos is a very popular thriller TV series that ran from 1999 to 2007.
- Directors and producers still use Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological theories and techniques in order to create a successful, gripping thriller.
- In the 2000’s horror thrillers were created which combined the two genres, this brought a new audience into the thriller genre.
